Rated 1 out of 5 by from Only lasted a year I bought this a year ago. It will not start. The mower has a 3 year warranty but the company and thier authorized dealers blame it on bad gas. The gas was fine but changed it out and cleaned all parts. It still will not start. I think the carb is bad. Will have to fix it with my own money .

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Overall I was skeptical when thinking about buying this because of the reviews. This will be my third Cub Cadet lawnmower in 18 years. The first one the engine failed but I got warranty compensation to buy a second one which I have had until the drive control broke and was too costly to repair. I like the Cub Cadet because of the caster wells, I have lots of things to cut around in the yard. When I got it home I notice the engine was smaller in size than the previous Cub Cadet mowers. It made it much easier to lift out of the box because it has a handle of the front, the handle also helps in not bumping into object standing in your yard. Putting the grass bag together was little tricky but otherwise not much of a problem putting the rest of it together. The grass bag is not as good as the one in the past. It has no front cover and when you take it off grass will fall out. And the whole connection area is not sealed well so grass clippings do fly out. I mostly do mulching which the set up for that was easier than the lawnmowers of past. The first thing to get used to is the drive control. Old one I pulled bar towards me now I have to push it away which at first made it difficult to control at first but after a few times I was able to work it much better and because it is lighter in weight easier to handle. Yes Cub Cadet has used plastic parts like the wing nuts and you need to be careful on how close you get to bushes, small trees and rocks that you use for decoration. I find it a little hard to start since you have to push the bar forward and at the same time pullback on the rope making it awkward. Pulling backwards I do find the plastic guard on the back bottom can sort of get stuck I am thinking at some point it will break. Also with a smaller engine, I have a sloped yard, the wheels don’t spin in place as much requiring me to push it the slope to get going. The old one was heavier and the wheels would spin in high gear. It has hose connection to clean out the underside but I have not tried it yet. I did not find that it cuts uneven as others had stated. So overall I like it and approve it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Did the job, quality of some components is poor I bought the SC500EZ (electric start and caster wheels) from a small-town farm implement store that sells and services Cub Cadet. This is my first Cub Cadet purchase. Mowed only once so far, so really can't recommend the product to others until it stands the test of time. But I wanted to relay my experience to anyone out there looking to buy. It cut the lawn just fine (mulched). The salesman said the caster wheels are very popular because they eliminate the need to lift the front end up when turning around. I'm over 60 years old, and my wife also likes to mow, so it seemed like a good idea. They worked as advertised. It was incredibly easy to maneuver the mower around the yard. The combination of the personal-pace self-propelled system and the caster wheels made the whole thing effortless. However, be aware of several issues you will encounter as you get in close when mowing around pine trees, bushes, and shrubs: 1. The caster wheels get in the way. They sit up so high they get tangled up in the shrubs and you have to back up to extract them and maneuver them around the shrub. I have only used regular wheels before this, and I must say the regular wheels were easier around the edges (but harder to use in the open field). 2. Backing up is often difficult because the rubber guard across the back of the deck flips under the mower and somehow adds significant drag. 3. Near the left back wheel there is a 6 inch lever that sticks up and out. It is used to adjust the height of the back wheels. It gets caught in the shrubs as you go along the edges. I just know that it will break off one of these days when I hit a shrub too hard. A shorter lever that doesn't stick out so much would fix this. 4. This is my biggest issue: The electric start battery compartment is on the right side of the deck, along the edge. It is poorly and cheaply designed, and failed in TWO ways during my FIRST mowing. The compartment is basically a plastic box with a plastic cover with two flaps that snap into slots on the box, holding the cover on. Inside the box is a battery at the bottom and a bunch of electrical wires, fittings, and fuse box on top of the battery. There is a small opening on the outermost side of the box where the charger cord plugs into the battery. Hanging on the side of the box nearby the charging port is a piece of rubber that is plugged into the charging port when it isn't in use. a. The first failure was that the cover kept coming off of the box. The box is too small, extremely full, and there is a lot of pressure on the cover. The flaps in the cover just don't hold the cover on. They pop out easily and the cover comes off. The simple vibrations of mowing, and especially the scraping of shrubs easily pops the cover off. The dealer told me to duct tape the cover on. b. The second failure was that I lost the rubber piece that protects the charging port. Scrape along one shrub and it will tear the rubber piece off the side of the battery box. You won't find the rubber piece either. Now there are two exposed holes on the side of the battery box: the charging port and the hole where the rubber piece was anchored. The dealer told me to cover the holes with electrical tape. I also needed to adjust the mower height. The back wheels was easy. So were the caster wheels. But, I noticed the wing nut on the caster wheel is made of plastic that bends when you tighten it. I think this is the next thing to break. I bought this mower because my old mower was falling apart. Yes, it was held together with duct tape in many places. Now, after only one mowing, my new mower is being held together with duct tape and electrical tape. Really?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointing Mower was great when purchased. Purchased near the end of the mowing season. Started on first pull every time. Mower was winterized and kept in the garage all winter--Georgia winter not a Midwest winter. Now, I roll it out for first Spring mowing and no start. Tried new few. No start. Checked spark plug--looks brand new. No start. Tried starting fluid...starts for a second. I shouldn't have this issue...brand new mower. Now I get to figure out where to get warranty service. I bought this because of the casters. Stupid me.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Cheap hardware - why? I have had this mower for just under a year and love the way it runs and cuts. It starts on the first pull every time and is easy to use. The thing that I can't figure out is the why they used plastic wingnuts on to secure the front casters to the mower. At this price point, I expect more from a company like Cub Cadet. I was mowing along and the wheel just fell right off. I'm sure I bumped the plastic wingnut on the house or fence, but such is the life of a lawnmower wheel. Luckily, I have a decent supply of hardware in the garage and was able to find a washer and nut to replace the plastic wingnut. I will be heading to Lowe's to get some metal replacement wingnuts. Very disappointed in this obvious cost-cutting measure that sacrificed the quality of an otherwise good product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not that good of a mower, at all. I bought this mower based on other reviews and on previous purchases, this is not the Cub Cadet of years past. In short, find a different mower, maybe even a different brand. One of the top complaints about this mower that I had found was how quickly the bag fills up. I do not see how that can be a problem with how much cut grass blows out from around where the bag mounts to the mower. At first I thought that I had done something wrong, nope. The bag is mounted correctly to the metal frame and is seated correctly to the mower, it just does not seat/seal well, at all. This problem causes cut grass/clipping to be blown everywhere. Once you remove the bag to empty it the amount of cut grass/clippings that are collected everywhere on the mower is nuts, this thing is a mess and then that mess ends up on the ground needing to be swept up, thanks for the extra work Cub Cadet. The pins on the bag frame that hold the bag in place on the mower are metal resting on plastic, how many cycles of use is that part going to last? I can see that failing very quickly. As the plastic wears and the pins move farther away from the mower, the bag will start to creep away from its mounting point as well, this in turn will make a bad problem even worse. Very poor design on the bag indeed, but this seems to be an industry standard, way to follow and not lead. The front casters are O.K., but they do not swivel/turn as easily as they would lead you to believe. I am sure that they will work very well on perfectly flat ground, but any kind of an angle or incline makes it difficult to turn, and I do mean "any" kind of angle or incline. As for the height adjustment, easy enough to do and get done but why not have corresponding numbers on both sides of the wheel mount? Also here is another cheap part warning, the wing nuts for the carriage bolts to adjust the front caster wheels are plastic, another cheap part that will fail quickly. The adjustment for the rear wheels is simple and easy and works well with one drawback/problem that would be simple to fix: There is no corresponding/relating position number to the front wheels. Would it have been asking too much to put a position number on the stops for the rear wheels that matches to the same position on the front wheels? The MySpeed Drive System offers two distinct speeds, off and run. The "smooth engagement and superior speed variability" that Cub Cadet states and talks about is one of those "not so much" kind of things. You concentrate so hard on keeping the speed where you want it that it becomes a huge detriment and uncomfortable to use. The faster you go with the MySpeed Drive System is directly related to the amount of grass clippings that are blown around and don't make it into the bag. There needs to be a way to limit the maximum speed, more so than just not pushing as hard on the handle. The MySpeed Drive System working together with the caster wheels that don't swivel or turn as well as they should, if you instinctively push down on the handle to turn the mower, it speeds up the MySpeed Drive System and pulls away from you. Definitely a point where front-wheel drive is better than rear-wheel drive. I wish that the MySpeed Drive System was an option that I could choose to use only when I wanted to use it, but it is an all or nothing kind of system. The actual handle/control for the MySpeed Drive System also feels very cheap and flimsy, as if you were to put too much pressure on it, it might snap or break off. On the plus side and a positive, the engine does start up on the first pull. Unfortunately that is about the only positive or good thing that I can say about this mower so far. Try as I might, I can not find any horsepower rating for the engine anywhere. The dealer that I had bought it from kept telling me that it was rated at 159cc, I gave up after about 20 minutes of trying to explain to them that 159cc is the displacement of the engine, not a horsepower rating. Saying that a 350 cubic inch V-8 engine is rated and more than 5700 cubic centimeters does nothing to tell you what the horsepower rating is. Could the reason for no mention of the horsepower rating be that fact that it is not that high? As I had said at the start, this is not the Cub Cadet of years past, not by a long shot. Too much plastic and poor design, not enough durability, power and good/smart design. Not enough focus on quality and customer satisfaction and too much focus on the bottom line and making a product in the cheapest possible way. This is a cheap lawn mower, this is just not reflected by the price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great mower I've had it almost 2 years. I did two things to the mower, I put a Zerk fitting on each caster swivel, and replaced the in-tank fuel filter with an after-market clear plastic filter. Other than that, it's a great mower.
