How to Remove and Change a Walk-Behind Mower Wheel

These instructions will explain how to replace a wheel on one of Cub Cadet's walk-behind lawn mowers. Over time the wheel can become damaged or worn out, reducing traction and possibly the alignment of the mower Depending on your mower model, the instructions may vary slightly from the directions in your operator's manual. Always refer to your operator's manual for comprehensive instructions on changing lawn mower wheel before getting started.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Step 1: Prepare your mower for maintenance. Place your mower on a flat, level surface. Turn the mower off and make sure the engine is cool.  Disconnect the spark plug ignition wire and remove the key if equipped. This helps to ensure the machine doesn't start accidentally and cause you or those around you harm.

Step 2: Place the height adjustment lever at the highest level.

Step 3: Remove the hubcap. Gently pry the edges of the hubcap with a small flat-blade screwdriver to remove it.

Step 4: Remove the wheel. Use a socket wrench to remove the hardware securing the wheel.

Step 5: Slide the wheel off the axle.

Step 6: Lubricate the replacement wheel. Lubricate the new wheel's bushings with a dry lubricant, such as graphite.

Step 7: Replace the wheel. Slide the new wheel on the axle and reinstall the retaining hardware.

Step 8: Adjust the height adjustment lever to match the other three.

Step 9: Reconnect the spark plug ignition wire.
