How to Level a Mower Deck on your Cub Cadet Rider

If you notice your riding lawn mower is leaving an uneven cut of grass on your lawn while you mow, its deck is in need of adjustment. Follow the instructions below to level the mower deck on your Cub Cadet. The instructions may slightly vary, depending on your specific model. Refer to your operator's manual for detailed instructions.

Instructions

Step 1 - Preparing the Riding Mower

Position your riding lawn mower on a flat level surface and engage the parking brake. Turn off the engine and remove the ignition key to prevent an accidental start. Always wear heavy leather gloves when working with or near the blades.

Step 2 - Adjust the deck from front-to-rear

  1. Place the deck lift lever in one of the middle height positions.
  2. Rotate the blade closest to the discharge chute so that it's parallel to the lawn mower.
  3. Measure the distance from the front of the blade tip to the ground, then measure the distance from the rear of the blade tip to the ground. Note the difference. The front of the deck should be between 1⁄4” and 3⁄8” lower than the rear of the deck.
  4. Tighten or loosen the hex lock nut on the end of the front deck hanger rod to raise or lower the front of the cutting deck, if necessary. There may be an additional (jam) nut securing the lock nut in place. If it's present, loosen it prior to adjusting and retighten it following the adjustment.

Step 3 - Leveling your mower deck from side to side

  1. Rotate the blade closest to the discharge chute so that it's perpendicular to the lawn mower.
  2. Measure the distance from the right side of the right-hand blade tip to the ground, then measure the distance from the left side of the left-hand blade tip to the ground. Note the difference.
  3. Loosen, but do not remove, the hex bolt that secures the adjustment gear found on the left deck hanger bracket.
  4. Raise or lower the left side of the deck by turning the adjustment gear. The deck is properly leveled when both blade tip measurements taken earlier are equal.
  5. Retighten the hex bolt loosened earlier when proper adjustment is achieved.

Step 3 - Leveling your mower deck from side to side (XT Enduro Series)

  1. Rotate the blade closest to the discharge chute so that it's perpendicular to the lawn mower.
  2. Measure the distance from the right side of the right-hand blade tip to the ground, then measure the distance from the left side of the left-hand blade tip to the ground. Note the difference.
  3. Loosen, but do not remove, the jam that secures the adjustment nut found on the rod under the rear fenders inside each wheel.
  4. Slightly raise or lower the sides of the deck by turning each adjustment nut. The deck is properly leveled when both blade tip measurements taken earlier are equal.
  5. Retighten the jam nuts loosened earlier when proper adjustment is achieved.
